Meal Applications

Free Meals are available to students who qualify for Free or Reduced Price eligibility. We encourage all households to apply, even if you don't think you will qualify or if you elect not to participate in the school meal programs. The statistics received from the applications help determine the level of funding your child's school receives for many of its programs.

MORE QUALIFYING APPLICATIONS = MORE SCHOOL $$$

Applications are mailed to all currently registered students before the start of the new school year, using the address in each student's school data; a postage paid return envelope is provided in this mailing for you to return the fully completed application to our office by U.S. Mail. Beginning in August, applications are also available at all school sites and the VCUSD District Office, or you can print one from this webpage. Instructions for filling out the application are provided in the link on the left side of this page.

Students who attended a VCUSD school and qualified for Free or Reduced Price Meals at the end of the 2016-2017 school year have a 30 day "grace period" during which their status from the prior year remains in effect. This "grace period" ends on September 27, 2017. In order for students with this carryover eligibility to continue to receive free or reduced price meals with no interruption in their eligibility, a fully completed 2017-2018 application must be processed by the Student Nutrition office before September 27, 2017. Processing can take up to 10 days from the date it is received in our office, and meal charges must be paid during any interruption in eligibility.

Newly enrolled students and those who were not qualified for free or reduced price meals last school year will need to pay for their meals until a fully completed application has been processed by our office, and they have been determined to be eligible for free or reduced price meals. Processing can take up to 10 days from the date it is received in our office. Beginning in August, turn in a fully completed application as soon as possible; the sooner your application is processed, the sooner your student could begin receiving meals at no cost. A status of either Free or Reduced will result in your student receiving meals at no cost, as we do not charge a fee to students with Reduced eligibility.

Complete only ONE application per HOUSEHOLD. If you have more than one student and they attend different schools, write all their names on ONE application only. Applications should be completed using a black or blue ink pen - do not use pencil. The information you give will be used to determine the eligibility for Free or Reduced Price meals for your student(s). This information may also be used for other state or federally funded school benefits. Please Note: We cannot accept any copied or faxed applications. We must receive the ORIGINAL application, with the original signature of an adult household member, in order to determine eligibility.

FACTORS CONSIDERED IN THE APPLICATON PROCESS INCLUDE:

  • Total HOUSEHOLD size and total HOUSEHOLD incomeHOUSEHOLD composition for the purpose of making an eligibility determination is considered a group of related or unrelated individuals who live as one economic unit, and who share housing and living expenses. The TOTAL HOUSEHOLD INCOME is the amount of income each HOUSEHOLD member received last month before taxes - this includes wages, social security, pension, unemployment, welfare, child support, alimony, or any other cash income.
  • Foster Child who is the legal responsibility of the court or welfare agency can receive free meals regardless of the HOUSEHOLD's income. If you have foster children living with you, you need to complete an application in order for them to receive the free meal benefits they are entitled to; indicate foster children by marking an X next to the student's name in the appropriate column. If your HOUSEHOLD includes students who are not foster children, write their names on the same application.
  • Eligibility can also be based on receipt of CalFRESH [food stamps], CalWORKS or FDPIR benefits. If you or your children receive any of these benefits, complete an application listing all students in the HOUSEHOLD and write the case number where indicated.
